Common questions

Start & requirements

How do I set up automatic start?

Create a Bluetooth automation for your AirPods Pro 3 in Shortcuts and add the AirPulse action “Start Pulse Tracking”. Enable "Automation" and turn off "Confirm Before Run" so AirPulse can start without asking. Tap the play button at the bottom right to test the shortcut

Does AirPulse start while the iPhone is locked?

Yes. After the one-time setup, the personal automation runs “Start Pulse Tracking” when the AirPods Pro 3 connect. The iPhone can stay locked

Do I need Pro for automatic start?

No. Without Pro, you can use up to three auto starts per day. Pro removes the daily limit

Which permissions does AirPulse need?

AirPulse needs Health access to heart rate data plus read and write access to workout data. AirPulse sessions are not saved as workouts in Apple Fitness. Location access applies to optional place filters and session routes. Without location access, Save Battery remains enabled; the Live Activity is unavailable in this mode

Can I use AirPulse outside a traditional workout?

Yes. AirPulse sessions are not limited to sport. Session tags can organize recordings for contexts such as work, studying, commuting, home, or rest

Can AirPulse take one reading every hour or at scheduled times?

No. AirPulse does not provide scheduled single readings. The app records available heart rate values during an active session

Do I have to use automatic start?

No. Automatic start is optional and works only after you create a personal automation in Apple Shortcuts. Without that automation, open AirPulse manually. Recording starts automatically when the app opens

Live Activity & controls

What do I see during an active session?

AirPulse shows current heart rate in the app and through the Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island

Why is the Live Activity not appearing?

The Live Activity appears only during an active session. Check Save Battery in AirPulse and the Live Activities setting for AirPulse in iOS Settings. When Save Battery is enabled, the Live Activity remains off. Save Battery cannot be disabled without location access. If it is still missing, run the AirPulse diagnostic

Do I need to add the display as a widget?

No. AirPulse does not provide a Home Screen or Lock Screen widget. During an active session, the Live Activity appears automatically on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island

Can I start with a specific tag or change it with Siri?

Yes. The Shortcuts action “Set Session Tag” assigns the selected tag to an active session. If no session is running, it starts a new session with that tag. You can find the required tag ID by opening the tag in tag management

Why does pulse recording return to Start immediately?

Open iOS Settings for AirPulse and make sure Live Activities are enabled. In Apple Health, also allow AirPulse to read heart rate and workout data and to write workouts. If the display still returns to Start, run the AirPulse diagnostic

My AirPods are connected, but AirPulse receives no heart rate. What can I do?

Check whether heart rate tracking is enabled for your AirPods Pro 3 and whether Apple Health shows new heart rate values. Use the iPhone as the audio source. If no value arrives, wear both AirPods, place them in the case briefly, reconnect them, or play audio. If Apple Health receives values but AirPulse does not, run the AirPulse diagnostic

Why do I see a heart rate when no AirPulse session is active?

AirPulse reads available heart rate values from Apple Health without filtering by source. A value may therefore come from another device, such as an Apple Watch. A visible heart rate does not mean that an AirPulse session is active

Can I show the Live Activity only in the Dynamic Island?

No. iOS treats the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen display as parts of the same Live Activity. AirPulse cannot enable one display and hide the other

What changes when Save Battery is enabled?

Save Battery stops AirPulse from using location in the background and also turns off the Live Activity to conserve battery. The Live Activity, place filters, and route history are therefore unavailable in this mode. You can enable a notification for sessions started by a shortcut, but AirPulse cannot notify you if recording later stops in the background

Tags, heart rate zones & audio

What can audio feedback announce?

With Pro, AirPulse can announce zone changes and personal limits through your headphones. You can assign audio profiles to session tags and use your own audio files

How do heart rate zones, audio profiles, and session tags work together?

The audio profile controls signals, intervals, and personal limits; the heart rate zone profile defines the BPM boundaries of the zones. Both profiles can be assigned to session tags. Without an assignment, AirPulse uses the respective default profile. You can create manual zone profiles; using them for audio feedback and the zone chart requires Pro

Why am I not hearing audio feedback?

Check that an AirPulse session is active, Pro is unlocked, the intended zone or limit is enabled in the audio profile, and the session uses the correct tag. Tags without their own audio profile and sessions without a tag use the default profile. Audio feedback may also be muted in the Live Activity

Location & data

Why does AirPulse use location data?

AirPulse uses location data for optional place filters and tag-based session routes. It saves route points only when Pro is active and location history is enabled for the current session tag

Why was no route saved for my session?

Saving a route requires Pro, location access, Save Battery turned off, health data allowed for workouts in iOS, and location history enabled for the active session tag. The map appears after the session ends

Why does route recording stop when I lock the iPhone?

Along with location access, Save Battery, and location history for the active session tag, check the Lock Screen setting. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, scroll to Allow Access When Locked, then turn on Health Data for Workouts, Lock Screen, Widgets & Live Activities. When this switch is off, route recording can stop after the iPhone locks

Why does the diagnostic say that workouts cannot be read even though access is enabled?

iOS does not show apps the workout read permission directly. AirPulse therefore checks whether Apple Health returns an existing workout. If none is found, the permission may be missing or Apple Health may contain no workouts yet. If Apple Fitness shows no saved workouts, you can ignore this warning

Where does AirPulse store my sessions?

The session database is stored locally on your device. When iCloud is available for your Apple Account, AirPulse can use it for backup and restore. You do not need an AirPulse account, and the provider does not operate an upload server for app data

Compatibility & limitations

Does AirPulse support Apple Watch?

AirPulse does not provide an Apple Watch app or Watch controls. It reads heart rate values from HealthKit without filtering by source, so values provided by the Watch may appear. Automatic start and connection detection are designed for configured AirPods Pro 3. AirPulse does not provide independent, continuous Watch recording

Can AirPulse send heart rate to Garmin or other devices?

No. AirPulse currently does not provide Bluetooth heart rate transmission to Garmin or other receivers

Can I use AirPulse alongside another workout app?

iOS supports only one active HealthKit workout session on the iPhone. If the other app should save the workout and heart rate, start AirPulse first, move it to the background, and then start the workout in the other app. Avoid opening AirPulse again while that workout is running. AirPulse cannot guarantee reliable compatibility with every app

Does AirPulse replace a medical assessment?

No. AirPulse displays heart rate data for personal use and does not replace medical advice, diagnosis, or emergency care
